The Brooding Crown - Chapter 1

4 weeks to go until release! Here's the synopsis and chapter 1 for you to enjoy now. Don't forget to sign up to my mailing list to receive the next chapters, some of which will NOT be shared anywhere else!

The Brooding Crown
The Second Book of Caledan

Soren has defeated his usurping uncle and the semblance of peace has returned to Caledan, but surrounded by the twelve noble houses of Caledan, King Soren can trust few. In the shadows, treasonous thoughts grow. When news of Zaki’s presence in Roher reaches Soren, can he ally all of Caledan to his cause – and keep them?

Zaki has not given up on his plans to regain Caledan’s throne. First he must prove himself to Harad, the mighty king of Roher, but Zaki will stop at nothing to gain the support of Roher’s army, march on Caledan’s borders and take back the throne of the dragon kings.

War returns to Caledan, but a greater threat looms. The pact is broken. The Eldarkind are fading. The dragons war amongst themselves. A power too terrible to name grows in the North, and He seeks revenge. Only Eve stands in His way – but can she stop magic as old as time?

Chapter 1

Talons pinned Soren to the bed, gripping his flesh. He twisted, crying out as he thrashed, but the claws did not relinquish their grasp. With great shuddering gulps, Soren surfaced from sleep to his dimly lit bedchamber.
Cautious faces loomed over him. The hands, not talons, which had held him down loosened. One of the hands stroked his own in comfort, whilst the other soothed his forehead with a cold cloth, wiping the sweat from his face. His clammy nightclothes clung to him, constricting his movements.
Soren’s breathing slowed to a weak flutter as he lay back into his pillow, his eyes slipping shut once more.
“Another nightmare?” Edmund’s voice sounded from his side.
Soren did not nod; the answer was obvious.
“The usual,” Soren murmured. “Zaki’s searching for me, hunting me through the castle dungeons. I try to run, but I cannot. It’s as if the air has turned to water and I’m drowning, but then all of a sudden everything turns to light and pain and fire searing through me. In that moment, I know he’s found me, and I know I’m dead.”
Soren opened his eyes as Edmund gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. Edmund’s face was ashen with his own exhaustion. He sat with Soren, guarding him through the inevitable torture that returned every night.
“This will not last forever,” said Edmund.
Soren rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “I hope you’re right. I cannot last on nightmares.”
Edmund did not reply, but Soren had a feeling he would be thinking the same. He had tried to send Edmund away for the man’s own health and sanity, but every night, when Soren awoke hyperventilating and in a blind panic, Edmund’s presence was the first thing he noticed.
With a flick of Edmund’s hands, the servants dispersed, though it took an extra shoo for the physician to retreat.
“You are safe here, Soren. Zaki is most likely dead, but if not, he would not be able to reach you.” Edmund shuffled to an armchair and sank into it with a sigh of relief. “It has been over two months since your uncle escaped. Rest easier in the knowledge that all of Caledan knows him for a traitor, a usurper… and a murderer,” Edmund added softly, his eyes flicking to Soren. “Zaki will find no shelter here.”
“I tell myself that daily, yet now I know what he’s capable of. The worst thing is not knowing where he is. I almost expect him to jump from behind the curtain or under the bed. Ridiculous, I know. And yet I cannot dispel the fear. I was so close to returning true peace and security to Caledan. He escaped so easily – what if he returns?”
“Zaki is long gone. The hundreds of armoured men crossing the border heading south, bearing no banner or crest, could only be him fleeing with his last supporters. The deserts will claim him before he reaches anywhere that he could survive.”
Soren could not help but question otherwise. Every shadow held his uncle waiting to leap out and kill him. Even at night, Soren insisted on the room being lit to give an extra shred of peace to his mind, for what it was worth, but the nightmares came as virulently as ever.
“What is it you fear the most?” Edmund’s hooded eyes regarded Soren thoughtfully.
Soren stirred, pulling the cover closer around him, despite the insufferable warmth it created. His eyes drifted closed again. They ached with such a fierce throb that it hurt to open them. “I’m not sure.” He’s a monster, and his absence only makes him grow more terrible. Soren could not think of his uncle’s face, nor his name, without flinching.
“I fear that he will never give up, that he will return, that he will hunt me down and that there is nothing I can do to stop it. I fear that he will kill me – I fear death.” Soren shivered as he thought of the blackened and contorted bodies left behind by his uncle. “I fear how he will kill me, what dark weapon he would use against me. Castle walls feel as thin as air when I know that he could escape from such a prison.”
“The entire kingdom hunts for him, Soren. He could not pass our borders, let alone reach Pandora or you. You have nothing to fear.”
“Yet Roher supplies him with military technology – so how sure can you be that he will seek to come alone?” Soren’s voice rose in pitch as his breathing quickened again.
Edmund paused. “I do not understand it myself. Lord Behan’s intelligence suggests that the incendiary device used in your uncle’s escape was almost certainly developed and produced within Roher’s borders, yet we cannot be sure Harad supplied it. Harad has remained true to his word: he left peacefully and has not returned.”
“Yet,” Soren said. The word hung ominously in the air.
“Perhaps Harad will return. However, think of the journey Zaki would have to undertake to even reach Roher’s borders, let alone its capital city. Why would Harad assist him, after trading him with us? Surely, he is a lost cause.”
Soren did not answer. His gaze drifted from the stone walls of his chamber to the flickering light of the candle on his side table. Once more, he wondered how fire could break stone. “I don’t know what to believe anymore, Edmund.”

To be continued...

I hope you enjoyed the first taste of The Brooding Crown! Don't forget to sign up to my mailing list to receive the next chapters, some of which will NOT be shared anywhere else!

What should creatives choose - love or money?

Writers and artists are traditionally thought of as poor mites and yes, although many creatives now are moving to change that - success on a huge scale is entirely possible and realistic, and being a creative can bring in as much/more than a day job if you go about it the right way and have just the right amount of luck - typically we're all struggling to make ends meet from our art at the very beginning.

So, it raises the question; what should we choose - love, or money?

Do we create what we love, regardless of the financial hardship it may cause us in the near future? Do we sacrifice time spent on doing what we love to have a day job - and therefore financial security?

It's a complicated answer. We all wish we could say we choose love - creativity - but life isn't so simple!

Earlier this year, I said that once I finished university (which I did on June 8th - yay!), I would be a full time author. I knew full well I'd still have to keep a part time job at he very least to be able to make ends meet. I only expected to work very few hours, and spent the vast majority of my time creating.

Well - as life happens, it's not turned out so simply! As Joanna Penn once said, to succeed as a creative, you have to be able to balance what you want/need from life and be realistic about what's possible at each stage of the process. It's also about making the necessary sacrifices. What are you willing/able to give up to achieve your creative goals?

Well, it turns out that I need to work a lot more than I thought I would to make ends meet in a way I'm satisfied with. To me, that means being able to comfortably support my family so we don't have to worry about our basic needs being met. I am very fortunate to have an understanding partner who has reconciled himself to the fact that I won't be going out and getting a well paid day job. For that, I'm very grateful!

Now, I've made the very difficult choice to work more hours each week. This is a double-edged knife; on the one hand, I now will make enough to cover my half of the bills and give my family financial security. It's very important to me to be financially independent. I can work and contribute - and therefore I should. Don't get me wrong - if I could do that just from my writing, I would! On the other hand, that financial security means I have even less time for writing now than I thought I would.

It means I'll have to scale back how many projects I'm scheduling - already I'm noticing the difference and falling behind where I wanted to be. It's frustrating! It means I'll have less time to write in the future too, although that will of course be the biggest priority for me outside work.

The type of person I am means that I could not stand by and expect/watch someone else pay for me. I feel duty bound to pay for myself in this life. I also feel duty bound to provide what I can to my family - why should they go without just so I can indulge myself? Certainly, I aim to make a full time living from writing and illustrating - but I also know that realistically, that's a while off. In the meantime, I need to make ends meet.

It's been a difficult choice - one I wish I didn't have to make - but I feel I'm doing the right thing. It doesn't feel like it at times, knowing I will have less time to do what I love, but I hope in the long run it will pay off. In the meantime, onwards and upwards we go! :-)

Don't forget to comment/connect with me on social media - have you had to make any sacrifices to your creative time for one reason or another? How do you reconcile with this?

Ciao for now,

Meg

The Brooding Crown Release Date & Cover!!

Hi!!!

I've been looking forward to this post for AGES! I'm super excited to at last share the cover of The Brooding Crown: The Second Book of Caledan with you!

I can also at last share the publication date:

The Brooding Crown will be released
on Thursday July 16th 2015!

This is my favourite project ever - I have loved working on it every minute and cannot wait to share it.

So - what do you think?

This took 5 hours of illustration by hand and closely ties in to the cover of The Tainted Crown. The Tainted Crown features the royal crown of Caledan, whereas The Brooding Crown features the royal crown of Roher, a country you will be seeing lots more of in The Brooding Crown!

That's all the spoilers you're getting for now, but I'll be releasing the first chapters to my mailing list. Sign up to receive them!

Hope you like it! Feedback welcome as always. :-)

Jogging through June

Hi all,

Hope you're well!

It's June already - how!? 2015 is rushing by.

May's main success was of course publishing The Wild Colouring Book. It's gone down a storm! I've been overwhelmed by all the people sending in snaps of them colouring it in and generally enjoying it. It's awesome to have created something for people to have fun with!

@Emma_stitch on Twitter getting ready to colour!
I didn't meet all my May targets - alas, it happens! So I have a bit of catching up this month. But it's not a problem, as I had built some slack into June's timetable just in case.

Unfortunately, I've been rather ill for a couple of months and it turns out that I've had glandular fever! The fever is long gone, but unfortunately I've been left with extreme fatigue. Even the most simple, unstrenuous things tire me out and I can't concentrate for long at the moment. That's really shot me in the foot in May! :S

So June will, in part, be given over to getting back to good health and fitness.

My writing goals for June are:

1. Final edits of The Brooding Crown, now I have received it back from my lovely editor Sophie.
2. Proofing of The Brooding Crown (by the end of the month I should have a copy in my hands - how exciting!!)
3. Finish off the tweaks to The Tainted Crown and reupload to sales platforms (will now include a preview for The Brooding Crown!)
4. Start releasing material for Accounting For Authors. (May tweak the title to Finance for Authors too since that fits better...)

My illustrating goals are:

1. Pitch to a pubisher for a follow up colouring book project. ;-)

I'll also start releasing material for The Brooding Crown! The cover and the first few chapters will be released. Exciting times! :-)

What are you doing this month?

Let me know in the comments, or catch me on social media!

Happy Monday,

Meg

Mix-it-up-May

Hi,

How do?

I achieved all of my April targets, which is great. The Brooding Crown is now with my editor, and The Wild Colouring Book is finished. I have the first copy in my hands, am waiting on the shipment of preordered signed copies to arrive this week, and everything is set up and ready to go to launch the sales pages online. Yay!

Things are really heating up now we're in May, though! This month is so random... I'm working on a real mix of projects.

The Tainted Crown is undergoing a bit of TLC this month - it needs a few tweaks before I'm happy for it to sit alongside The Brooding Crown. [Sign up to my fiction newsletter to hear release news & updates first!]

The Wild Colouring Book will be released on May 28th (next Thursday), so there's lots to do for the launch of that! I'm really looking forward to the launch party and hope I get lots of entries in the giveaway and colouring competition! [Sign up to my colouring newsletter to hear release news & updates first!]

I'm getting cracking with the Accounting For Authors project after a couple months forced downtime to focus on uni stuff and prioritise The Brooding Crown. I'm lucky to have the very talented Joanna Penn of thecreativepenn.com / jfpenn.com offering me advice & support on this project. This project will become a much greater focus of mine from now. [Sign up to my non-fiction newsletter to hear release news & updates first!]

The Shattered Crown: The Third Book of Caledan is already in the outlining phase so that's going to come onto the to-do list too! But not this month. Revising The Brooding Crown (once I receive it from my editor) comes first!

New series - no spoilers! I have outlined 13 books in a completely new series (detailed plotting for the first installment is completed) - I just need time to fit them in! I need to write The Shattered Crown first though, but ohhhhh I *really* want to start writing this new series! ;-)

Oops, I'm getting ahead of myself now! So the rest of May will be busy, and the year will be running along at full pelt much as it is now. It's so exciting to finally be in the middle of managing all these different writing projects after having planned out my 2015 schedule back in January.

Well, no time like the present. The books don't write themselves if I'm blogging! Bye for now, don't forget to let me know what creative projects you have on the go in the comments/on social media! :-)

The Wild Colouring Book release date announced!

Super excited. Today, the proof copy of The Wild Colouring Book arrived!

Suffice to say, I got rather giddy! Today I've spent some time testing it with felt tip pens, artist markers and various colouring crayons. It's performing really well!

The paper is not bleeding at all for the felt tips, which is brilliant, and the colouring pencils are laying down a fantastic, vibrant layer of colour. It's really easy to shade. Happy days! I so hope that people enjoy colouring it. :D

I'm happy to announce that it will be published on Thursday 28th May 2015!

Int he meantime, you can grab some FREE colouring pages from the book exclusively from my website at illustration.megcowley.co.uk!

Life is perfect when...

Today is a good day. I'm feeling very grateful and thankful for all the blessings in my life. I guess today is one of those days that just feels perfect and it's because I'm working towards/fulfilling my dreams today - which really fills the soul with contentment.

It's been a productive day; I've finished two illustrations for The Wild Colouring Book and the cover design for The Brooding Crown, both of which I'm really excited to share! (But not yet... ;-) ) Both projects are on track. What's more, it's only 3pm!

It's sunny and beautiful weather today, and I'm just about to take a quick tea break and and start reading a new book outside, whilst soaking up the vitamin D. It's neither too warm, nor too cold - just right. The cats are keeping me company and being generally adorable and friendly (... and a *little* bit mischievous, but they can't help that!).

I feel in a position of incredible privilege and am so grateful I have the opportunity to do this. It wasn't that long ago that I felt hopeless and despairing; depressed at my career prospects and unhappy with the path I saw before me.

Now I get to live every day working towards *my* goals, the ones that deep down, I *really* want to achieve. I cannot ask for more from life than that. I hope that the hard work and dedication I'm putting in now will lead to the fruition of my dreams and being able to make a living - pay my bills - from doing what I love.

Anyway. That's enough time sat inside today working - I'm off out to enjoy the sun for a while! Have a lovely week. :-)

Mad March Roundup & Arty April To Do List!

One of the images for my adult colouring book.
Yikes. I can't believe March is over already. It was such a busy month! If you follow me on twitter, you'll notice I even dropped off the face of the earth for a bit. You know you're busy when you don't even tweet!

I was ill, but also really productive. Totally finished my dissertation (aka 13,200 words of 'kill me now'!), the final essay of my degree (YAY!) and more importantly to me, editing The Brooding Crown and outlining my new series. I am *almost* done with uni stuff (finishing mid-May) to focus solely on writing. Feel the anticipation!

The Brooding Crown is now in the hands of my lovely writer friends to critique before it goes to my also lovely editor Sophie next month, and my new series, which will be written as a serial, has been plotted to the tune of 3 series and the first installment outlined. Woohoo! Not sure when I'll have time to start writing it, mind.... I'm hoping to fit it in later this year, but there's lots of other stuff to do too!
One of the images for my adult colouring book.
My surprise project of March was an adult colouring book - finally, I seem to have found the output for my art that is most appropriate for other people to enjoy too! :-) I've not released title/cover yet, but it's coming soon. That's already one third complete - I've been a busy bee! - and is on track to be finished by the end of April and published by the end of May. More details to follow on that. :-)

One of the images for my adult colouring book.
So, seeing as most of my writing stuff is wrapped up for now, my April to do list is much more arty! That's great - I've missed drawing. I should have stumbled on this adult colouring book idea sooner!

Here's what I'm up to this month:

  • Finishing all illustrations (about 30) for my adult colouring book.
  • Cover design and interior file creation for the colouring book.
  • Creating a sub-section of my website for the colouring book and a separate mailing list (I have one for fiction, non fiction and will have a third for this).
  • Cover design & back-cover blurb for The Brooding Crown.
  • Nervously await feedback from my critiquers on The Brooding Crown!
  • Being a guest for my local scout group, who have invited me along to interview so they can get their writer badges! Very excited to hopefully inspire some young writers. :-)
What are you up to this April? Do let me know in the comments/on twitter/facebook.

Bye for now!

Meg
